About the series

Ilwad Elman is #SolvingIt. @ilwadelman is a Somali Canadian activist who advocates for human rights, peace building and social justice. She serves as the One Young World Ambassador to Somalia, helps run Sister Somalia, the first rape crisis center in Somalia, and has addressed the UN Security Council. She has also co-written the Youth Action Agenda on Countering Violent Extremism, which was cited in a UN Security Council resolution. In addition to making the 2019 shortlist for the Nobel Peace Prize, she was also a 2015 recipient of Harvard's Gleitsman International Activist Award for her leadership and humanitarian work. Bana al-Abed is #SolvingIt. @banaalabed10 is a 10-year-old Syrian refugee and author. When she was 7, she documented the horrors of the Syrian Civil War in Aleppo on Twitter, with her mother's help. In 2017, she published "Dear World," a book about her experiences in Syria. She hopes to become an English teacher for Syrian children someday. She founded @FreePeriods after learning that students were missing school because they were unable to afford menstrual products. Xiuhtezcatl Martinez is #SolvingIt. The 19-year-old indigenous #climate #activist, whose first name is pronounced shoe-tez-caht, is also a hip-hop #artist. In his hometown of Boulder, #Colorado, he helped ban the use of pesticides in city parks and he's fought against fracking in his state. Xiuhtezcatl is also one of 21 young plaintiffs taking part in a landmark lawsuit against the U.S. federal government for failing to act on #ClimateChange. Greta Thunberg is #SolvingIt. What happens when politicians drag their feet for decades on climate change? This is a problem that convinced @gretathunberg to decide not to attend school and instead strike outside the Swedish Parliament building, demanding that politicians in Stockholm, Sweden, take action on #climatechange. Starting out as a one-person protest, she got the attention of media and more people began listening to her message. She launched #FridaysForFuture, a global movement of students and adults striking outside of government buildings and urging their representatives to implement new policies. Having become the face of a generation tired of waiting, Greta Thunberg has been invited to address parliaments in the UK and in France. But whenever she travels to another country, she refuses to fly because of the environmental impact of air travel. Just a few days ago, the 16-year-old set sail across the Atlantic Ocean to attend the UN Climate Action Summit @unfccc in #NewYork on zero-emissions boat. Though a plane would take only about 8 hours, this voyage will take 2 weeks.
