Orientalism Demystified: Eastern insights on Western myths

November 14, 2023, at 7 p.m.

      About the event

Orientalism began as a 19th century European art movement, but some say its influence never waned. Edward Said, the Palestinian American scholar, redefined our understanding of Orientalism, highlighting how its simplified, stereotypical depictions of the Eastern world by Western artists left a complicated legacy that is still evident in today’s art, pop culture and journalism. Adding urgency to this conversation, Orientalism takes on additional significance in light of the Western media coverage of the Israel-Gaza war.

Moderator Dena Takruri, a journalist and author, was joined by Kholood Al-Fahad, curator at Lusail Museum; Fatima Bhutto, an author and speaker; and Inaya Folarin Iman, a journalist and writer.

Held on November 14, 2023, this student-guided conversation reflected on the meaning of identity, representation and inclusion, using Lusail Museum’s collection of Orientalist art as a lens. The event was a collaboration among Doha Debates, Lusail Museum and VCUarts Qatar.
